PolyU Science Research Impact 2022 EP06 - Traditional Chinese Medicine for Bone Disease Management
Osteoporosis is a bone disease which causes bones to become weak and brittle. About one in three women and one in ten men over the age of fifty will suffer from bone fractures due to osteoporosis worldwide.
PolyU researcher Prof. Wong Man-sau from the Faculty of Science is dedicated to elucidating the underlying mechanisms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for disease management, including helping ensure bone health. Studies have demonstrated that TCM ingredients, including Epimedium, Ligustrum and Sambucus Williamsii Hance, have significant anti-osteoporotic effects. Prof. Wong has also collaborated with Jinan University to develop and formulate the standardized Sambucus Williamsii Hance extract, and has presented scientific evidence on the efficacy and safety of TCM to support the further development of Chinese patent medicines.
